WhatsApp has announced updates to the messaging platform to prevent fraud or spam calls.

A statement from the Meta-owned messaging app said that spam calls will be prevented through artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) systems.

The announcement by the company comes at a time when the rate of such fraudulent WhatsApp calls has increased in different parts of the world.

Some WhatsApp users have been harassed by calls made through unknown international numbers, while many have faced financial fraud.

A WhatsApp spokesperson said, "We have taken many steps to protect our users, but in recent times there has been an increase in fraud through international spam calls."

The spokesperson said that new measures are being taken to prevent this, which will reduce the rate of such calls by 50%.

A number of complaints from users reported that they received calls from numbers in several countries, including Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia and Vietnam. In most of the cases, these fraudulent calls offered jobs to consumers.

WhatsApp users in India have faced this problem more.

It should be noted that most users of WhatsApp belong to India.
